Our Story

Spinning Wheel Press was founded in 2016 by scientist, artist, and writer Ruthy Ballard and is now under national distribution by SPU/IPG. It publishes both books for children and art for adults, united by a common theme of transformation through playful self-exploration.

After a 20-year career as a professor and forensic DNA expert, Ruthy (AKA “Dr, Ruth Ballard”) experienced an unexpected creative awakening in 2014. Spurred by the death of a brilliant, charismatic mentor, she drafted four children’s books within a matter of months and generated dozens of colorful “duppy and uppy” cartoons, work that continues to this day. Inspired to share her creativity with an audience beyond her family and friends, and to promote and support other writer-artists with similar interests, she founded Spinning Wheel Press, where she is now the Creative Director.

Learn more about the founding of Spinning Wheel Press by reading Ruthy’s short memoir: How Spinning Wheel Press Came to Be: My Three-Year Journey to Authenticity (coming soon).
